Rockall goes live

I’m delighted to say that my new business, Rockall, is up and running. I’m not expecting a big splash, it is a small enterprise, but it feels good and I’m especially excited to be doing this at this point in time. 2021 is shaping up to be a fascinating period in the energy industry with a whole new era, that’s been forming in the last couple of decades, being ushered in from the turmoil of 2020.

I’ve considered branching out on my own at a few points in my career. My excuse for not doing it before now? a new fascinating, more complex, challenging and well intentioned project always turned up in an action packed 30+years at bp. It’s been a privilege to work with so many brilliant people in many countries on amazing projects, but it’s time for my new venture with the added benefit of the wealth of experience my time at bp has given me.

My aim with Rockall is to make a positive contribution in the energy transition to lower carbon, affordable and accessible energy through major projects consulting, energy and infrastructure developments. My strapline is helping turn big ideas into full scale reality which is really what I love doing and to an extent is what I am.

Whilst I’m keeping Rockall small, my vision is not to do this alone but to use my skills in integration and collaboration to work with likeminded people, researchers, policy makers, companies, and with my extensive network of trusted experts and colleagues. If you’d like to collaborate or work with me, please do get in touch.

I’m offering major projects and project management consulting; project assessment; governance & assurance; developments capability and technology development. In technology, my areas of interest where I see the most relevant and interesting challenges at present are floating wind; marine energy; hydrogen, carbon capture and geothermal.

Why “Rockall”? I named it after the islet, way out in the Atlantic ocean, and the shipping forecast region. The islet’s a small granite pinnacle surrounded by Helen’s reef with cold water corals and the region is a huge area exposed to the full power of the Atlantic ocean, extending from the north of Scotland to the west coast of Ireland. The combination of this small, resilient, pristine lump of granite and the incredible natural power in the region feels fitting for a small company in the energy transition aspiring to help turn big ideas into reality. I hope you like it.
